Our History

The Dwelling Place For A Family Of Faith, Growing In Grace!

In June of 1939, a new Gospel Tent was erected on a vacant lot in Peach Alley near Henrietta Street for what was to be a short revival. The revival was conducted by Rev. Arthur Daniel Jones. Rev. Jones was assisted by his wife, a great evangelist, who was also known nationally as one of God’s great gospel singers, and by his son, a gifted pianist.

As the winter months approached, the services were moved to the chapel of a local funeral home. Several months shortly thereafter, the revival finally ended and the Reverend Jones returned to the field of evangelism.

In the summer of 1940, Rev. Arthur D. Jones returned to the Baltimore area and during this time a group of faithful followers persuaded him to establish a permanent House of Worship. Thus, in September of 1940, we opened the doors of 936 South Sharp Street and the Jones Tabernacle Baptist Church was born. By December of the same year, we had outgrown our quarters and the Lord led us to 129 W. Hamburg Street.
In 1943, our pianist, Brother Arthur E. Jones, was called into the Gospel ministry and was ordained a preacher in God’s service. After returning from the Armed Services in 1946, he was elected our Assistant Pastor.
In 1956, we found ourselves once again pressed for space and the Lord led us to 404 S. Fremont Avenue. On the first Sunday in September, we marched over the bridge singing, “We’re Marching to Zion.” Over three hundred people joined in our efforts. We praised God for one more milestone.
In July 1967, our founding pastor, Rev. Arthur D. Jones, went home to be with the Lord. His devotion and leadership will never be forgotten. Rev. Arthur E. Jones succeeded his father as Pastor of the Jones Tabernacle Baptist Church.

For thirteen years, the church grew and prospered in the service of the Lord. In 1969 we purchased our present location, and we burned the mortgage in less than one year.
In January 1981, Reverend Cynthia B. Jones, the daughter of Reverend Arthur E. Jones, was unanimously elected by the church body to serve as the Assistant Pastor of the Jones Tabernacle Baptist Church. She served faithfully and fruitfully until the Lord called her from labor to reward in 2005.
In November 2008, Reverend Robinson was called by God and appointed by Reverend Dr. Arthur E. Jones to serve and succeed his legendary leadership as Pastor of this great church. After four months of walking among the membership, Rev. C. Guy Robinson was confirmed as Pastor of the Jones Tabernacle Baptist Church and Rev. Dr. Arthur E. Jones became Pastor Emeritus.
In October 2013, The Lord called from earthly labor to heavenly reward Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Dr. Arthur E. Jones. His legendary leadership will never be forgotten.
